 What is Domestic Violence?

As well as the Sunflower Centre, there are many different services available to support people who are suffering from Domestic Violence.  There are services available both locally and nationally, and support both male and female victims.

 

ACTION ON ELDER ABUSE (AEA) 0808 808 8141 work to protect and prevent the abuse of vulnerable older adults. Whether you are an older person experiencing abuse, or are concerned about an older person who maybe experiencing abuse you must obtain advice to keep yourself/others safe from further harm. AL-ANON 0207 403 0888 is open 10am-10pm, offering a service to people whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else's drinking problem. Visit www.al-anonuk.org.uk for further information.

 

BROKEN RAINBOW 0300 999 LGBT (5428) or 08452 60 44 60 support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people experiencing Domestic Violence.  Broken Rainbow are the only National LGBT Domestic Violence Helpline providing confidential support to all memebers of the LGBT community, their family and friends, and agencies supporting them. The helpline service is run by trained LGBT people who have an understanding of your sexual identity issues along with the impact of Domestic Violence upon your life.  The helpline is open Monday 2pm-8pm, Wednesday 10am-1pm and Thursday 2pm-8pm. CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAUX (CAB) offers free advice and information and help people to resolve money problems, benefits issues, legal matters and give impatial advice on many other issues.

CHILDLINE 0800 1111 is the UK's fee helpline for children in distress or danger.  Trained volunteers are on hand 24hours a day to provide advice and support by phone or online. Visit www.childline.org.uk for further information.

 

CHILD SUPPORT AGENCY (CSA) 0845 7133 133 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm, Sat 9am-5pm) The purpose of the CSA is to assess, collect and pay child support maintenance, ensuring that parents who live apart meet their financial responsibilites to their children. Visit www.csa.gov.uk for further information.

HERTFORDSHIRE AREA RAPE CRISIS AND SEXUAL ABUSE CENTRE 01707 276512 (Thursday 7.30-9.30pm) A free and confidential telephone and face to face counselling and information service for women who have experienced rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse at any time in their life. HERTFORDSHIRE CONSTABULARY (POLICE) NON EMERGENCY NUMBER 0845 33 00 222 for general Police enquiries, advice , information and to report an incident/crime that has happened and is not considered urgent. Visit www.herts.police.uk for further information.

HOMESTART 0800 068 6368 is a charity which offers support, friendship and practical help to young families with at least one child under the age of 5, who are experiencing difficulties with parenting. Visit www.home-start.org.uk for further information.

 

JEWISH WOMEN'S AID 0800 591203 is a helpline for Jewish women and their children experiencin, or have experienced, Domestic Violece.   The service is free and confidential and they provide help, advice and support, outreach support and refuge space in London where Kashrut and Shabbat and festivals are strictly observed.  Viait www.jwa.org.uk for further information.

 

MAN KIND 01823 334244 is a dedicated helpline for men who are experiencing Domestic Violence, they allow you to talk to the trained staff about your experiences. They provide emotional support as well as provide information and advice.  The lines are open Mon-Fri 10am-4pm and Mon-Thurs 7pm-9pm. MEN'S ADVICE LINE 0808 801 0327 is a confidential helpline for men who are or have experienced Domestic Violence from their current or former partner.  The helpline is available for men in heterosexual and same-sex relationships.  The helpline is available Mon-Fri 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. They offer high-qualtiy advice and information.  Mind help make it possible for people who experience mental distress to live full lives and play their full part in society. NATIONAL CENTRE FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (NCDV)  0844 8044 999 provide a free, fast emergency service to survivors of Domestic Violence, regardless of financial circumstances, race, gender or sexual orientation.  Offering free legal advice and allows anyone to apply for an injunction within 24hours of first contact. NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HELPLINE 0808 2000 247 is a 24hour freephone helpline run by Refuge and Womens Aid. Giving support, help and information over the phone.  This is a confidential and Nationwide service and offer emergency accomodation for women and children when they most need it.  Visit www.nationaldomesticviolencehelpline.org.uk for further information.

 

NEWHAM ASIAN WOMEN'S PROJECT 0208 472 0528 offer South Asian women experiencing Domestic Violence advice, support, information and refuge spaces. The service specifically supports South Asian women who live in fear or are under threat. Visit www.nawp.org for further information.

 

NSPCC 0808 800 5000 The only free and confidential way for the public to take action to protect a child from harm. Visit www.nspcc.org.uk for further information.

 

RELATE 0300 100 1234 offers relationship counselling, family counselling, children and young people's counselling and sex therapy. Working to promote health, respect and justice within relationships and families. The counselling is offered face to face at one of the many relate offices nationwide, over the phone and even online, through the exhange of emails. SAMARITANS 0845 7909090 is a 24hour, confidential helpline, offering advice and support to anyone who needs emotional support or maybe at risk of suicide. Visit www.samaritans.org for further information.

 

SEXUAL ASSAULT REFERRAL CENTRES (SARC) 0808 178 4448 is a 24hour self referral service offering victims of rape and serious sexual assault advice and support as well as sexual screening and counselling. You take control of the situation, whether or not you want the Police involved and choose which support you would like. SOUTHALL BLACK SISTERS 0208 571 0800 are available Mon-Fri 10am-5pm but closed Wed 12.30-1.30. The service is a resource centre in West London providing a comprehensive service for black (Asian and African-Caribbean)women experiencing violence and abuse.  They offer specialist advice, information, casework advocacy, counselling and self-help support. Visit www.southallblacksisters.org.uk for further information.

 

THE HIDEOUT is a service provided by Women's Aid to help children and young people understand Domestic Violence. Also advice for adults experiencing Domestic Violence and how to discuss this with the children. Visit www.thehideout.org.uk for further information.

 

TURNING POINT 01923 221037 is a free and confidential service for Hertfordshire residents aged 18 years and over, who have a problem with Drugs and/or Alcohol. WATFORD SEXUAL HEALTH CLINIC (GUM CLINIC) 01923 217206  is a free, confidential, self-referral service providing advice and treatment for people who have got symptoms or could have caught a sexually transmitted infection (STIs). WATFORD WOMEN'S CENTRE 01923 816229 is a one stop drop in for women. Located in Charter Place, Watford the centre offers a wide range of courses, activities, coffee mornings, Domestic Violence support group, legal advice, Job Club and more.
